The Afar Triangle, a stark and dramatic region where northeastern Ethiopia meets western Djibouti at the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, features below-sea-level deserts, steep cliffs, volcanic formations, salt lakes, and craters. Within this triangle in Ethiopia lies the Danakil Depression, one of Africa's lowest points. The Awash River serves as the main water source, eventually dissipating into saline lakes during the annual dry period.
